4G/5G drive tests: 7 mistakes that ruin deliverables (and how to avoid them)
Field + post-processing checklist: what makes the difference between ‘some measurements’ and a deliverable teams can actually use.
Many “drive tests” generate a lot of data… but very little evidence that other teams can reuse: the route can’t be reproduced, RF context is incomplete, exports are inconsistent, and the report is too raw.
Here’s a simple checklist (field + post-processing) to avoid the classic pitfalls and ship a clean deliverable.
1) Starting with no clear test objectives
Before recording anything, write down:
- objective (coverage, HO, throughput, VoLTE QoE, indoor, etc.)
- area and time window (peak vs off-peak)
- scenarios (static, slow mobility, high mobility)
- expected deliverables (screenshots, logs, short report)
Without this, post-processing becomes guesswork.
2) Not standardizing the test protocol
Same route ≠ same test.
Standardize:
- device model / OS version
- radio mode (4G / 5G NSA / 5G SA depending on context)
- conditions (car, indoor, pedestrian)
- steps: start → stabilize → measure → annotate
3) Forgetting to connect measurements to location
The “why” usually comes from the map:
- where degradation happens
- transitions (HO / reselection)
- building / terrain effects
- route differences
If your tool doesn’t connect KPIs + tracks, your deliverable loses most of its value.
4) Capturing incomplete (or non comparable) KPIs
To avoid “we can’t conclude”:
- keep a stable KPI baseline (RSRP/RSRQ/SINR/SNR, serving cell, neighbors, etc.)
- add protocol visibility when needed (RRC/NAS/IMS)
- be careful with tech switches (4G↔5G), otherwise you compare apples to oranges
5) Missing context annotations
Even small context notes help a lot:
- start/end of an observed issue
- exact spot (intersection, building entrance, floor)
- user actions (reset, airplane mode, reboot…)
Tip: one short note every few minutes beats a long paragraph after the test.
6) Exporting “non shareable” evidence
A good deliverable must be shareable without a live explanation:
- readable screenshots (key KPIs + context)
- structured logs
- short report (what / where / when / impact / hypotheses)
For optimization and support teams, it’s the difference between “thanks” and “please redo the test”.
7) Ignoring privacy constraints
In operator / enterprise environments, it’s non-negotiable:
- no mandatory cloud upload
- user-controlled sharing/storage/retention
- masking sensitive elements in screenshots when needed
A report structure that works
- Executive summary (5 lines max)
- Map view (OK/KO areas)
- Top 3 findings + evidence
- Hypotheses (RF vs Core vs device)
- Actions / next measurements
