Interactive QCI / 5QI Table

QCI (QoS Class Identifier) defines the quality of service classes in 4G LTE (3GPP TS 23.203). 5QI (5G QoS Identifier) is its 5G NR equivalent (3GPP TS 23.501), extended to cover new use cases such as V2X, mission-critical communications, and low-latency enhanced mobile broadband.

Understanding QCI and 5QI

4G
QCI (QoS Class Identifier)

Defined in 3GPP TS 23.203, QCI classifies EPS bearers into 9 standardized classes. Each class defines a priority level, delay budget, and acceptable loss rate, ensuring appropriate quality of service for each traffic type.

5G
5QI (5G QoS Identifier)

Defined in 3GPP TS 23.501, 5QI extends the QCI concept for 5G NR. It retains the original 9 classes and adds values for V2X, mission-critical communications, low-latency broadband, and other advanced services.

GBR
GBR vs Non-GBR

GBR (Guaranteed Bit Rate) bearers provide a guaranteed data rate for real-time services (voice, video). Non-GBR bearers operate on a best-effort basis and are used for standard data traffic (web, email, signaling).

DC
Delay-critical GBR

Introduced in 5G, this type combines bit rate guarantees with strict latency constraints. Used for V2X, industrial augmented reality, and other ultra-reliable low-latency (URLLC) applications.

Frequently Asked Questions about QCI and 5QI

What is a QCI in 4G LTE?
QCI (QoS Class Identifier) is a standardized identifier defined by 3GPP (TS 23.203) that sets the quality of service parameters for an EPS bearer in 4G LTE. Each QCI specifies the resource type (GBR or Non-GBR), priority level, packet delay budget, and acceptable packet error loss rate. There are 9 standardized QCIs (1 to 9) plus operator-specific values.
What is a 5QI in 5G NR?
5QI (5G QoS Identifier) is the 5G NR equivalent of QCI, defined in 3GPP TS 23.501. It extends the QCI concept with additional values for new 5G use cases such as V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything), mission-critical communications (MC-PTT, MC-Video), and enhanced mobile broadband with low latency (eMBB).
What is the mapping between QCI and 5QI?
5QI values 1 through 9 map directly to QCI values 1 through 9 from 4G, with the same QoS parameters. 5G adds additional 5QI values (65 to 86) for specific services like mission-critical PTT (5QI 65), V2X (5QI 75, 79), low-latency eMBB (5QI 80), and various other services (5QI 82 to 86).
What is the difference between GBR and Non-GBR?
GBR (Guaranteed Bit Rate) means the network guarantees a minimum data rate for the bearer. It is used for real-time services like VoLTE voice (QCI 1) or video calls (QCI 2). Non-GBR does not guarantee a minimum data rate and is used for best-effort services like web browsing (QCI 6/8/9) or IMS signaling (QCI 5).
How does HiCellTek display QCI and 5QI?
HiCellTek displays the QCI or 5QI of each active bearer on your Android device in real time. The L3 Decoder module decodes NAS and RRC messages to identify EPS bearers/QoS flows, their QCI/5QI values, guaranteed bit rates, and associated QoS parameters. Ideal for validating network QoS configuration during drive tests or audits.
Which QCI values are used for VoLTE?
VoLTE primarily uses QCI 1 (GBR, priority 2, 100 ms delay budget, 10^-2 error rate) for conversational voice traffic. The associated IMS signaling uses QCI 5 (Non-GBR, priority 1, 100 ms). In 5G, the equivalents are 5QI 1 and 5QI 5 respectively.
