What is an IMEI Number?
The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a unique 15-digit identifier assigned to every mobile device with a cellular radio. Managed by the GSMA (GSM Association), the IMEI system ensures that every phone, tablet, and IoT module on any GSM, UMTS, or LTE/5G network can be uniquely tracked and identified.
The IMEI is not tied to a SIM card or phone number, it is permanently associated with the device hardware. This makes it essential for network operators managing device policies, law enforcement tracing stolen equipment, and telecom engineers qualifying handsets for network testing and diagnostics.
| Segment | Digits | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| TAC (Type Allocation Code) | 1–8 | Identifies the manufacturer and device model |
| Serial number | 9–14 | Unique identifier for the individual unit |
| Check digit | 15 | Luhn algorithm validation |
Dual-SIM devices carry two separate IMEI numbers, one per radio module. You can display yours instantly by dialing *#06# on any phone.
How to Check Your IMEI

Is My Phone Blacklisted?
A blacklisted phone is a device whose IMEI has been reported to a shared database (typically maintained by carriers and the GSMA) as lost, stolen, or involved in fraud. Once blacklisted, the device may be blocked from connecting to mobile networks in the country, and in some cases, internationally through the GSMA IMEI Database.
Blacklisting is enforced at the network level: when a device attempts to register on a cell tower, the operator checks the IMEI against the Equipment Identity Register (EIR). If the IMEI is flagged, the connection is denied regardless of which SIM card is inserted.
Common reasons for blacklisting: theft or loss reports, unpaid contract obligations, insurance fraud, or customs violations. If you are purchasing a second-hand device, checking the IMEI status before buying is strongly recommended.

What does an IMEI check reveal?
An IMEI check reveals the device brand, model name, chipset manufacturer (Qualcomm, MediaTek, Exynos), supported network bands (2G/3G/4G/5G), release year, and whether the device is compatible with professional network diagnostic tools. Our free IMEI check covers over 250,000 devices.
How do I check my IMEI number for free?
Dial *#06# on your phone to display your IMEI, then enter it in the search field above. Our IMEI check is 100% free, requires no signup, and returns results instantly. We never store your full IMEI number.
Is it safe to check my IMEI online?
Yes, checking your IMEI online is safe when using a trusted tool. Our IMEI checker only uses the TAC (first 8 digits) for the database lookup and never stores your full 15-digit IMEI. All queries are anonymized and processed over HTTPS.
Can I check an IMEI to see if a phone is stolen?
Our IMEI check identifies the brand, model, and chipset of a device. Blacklist status (stolen/lost) is maintained by carriers and the GSMA IMEI Database. We recommend contacting your carrier or using the GSMA Device Check service for blacklist verification.
What is the difference between IMEI check and IMEI lookup?
An IMEI check and IMEI lookup refer to the same process: identifying a mobile device using its 15-digit IMEI number. An IMEI check may also include Luhn algorithm validation to verify the number is correctly formatted. Our tool performs both validation and device identification.
How many digits is an IMEI number?
An IMEI number contains exactly 15 digits. The first 8 digits form the TAC (Type Allocation Code) identifying the manufacturer and model. Digits 9-14 are the device serial number. The 15th digit is a check digit calculated using the Luhn algorithm.
Can I check IMEI without the full 15 digits?
Yes. You can enter just the first 8 digits (the TAC) to identify the brand, model, and chipset. The full 15-digit IMEI adds Luhn validation and serial number verification, but the TAC alone is sufficient for device identification.
Does IMEI check work for all phone brands?
Yes. Our IMEI database covers all major manufacturers including Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, Huawei, Google Pixel, Motorola, Nokia, Sony, Realme, and many more, over 250,000 devices from 20+ brands worldwide.
