EARFCN / NR-ARFCN Calculator

EARFCN (E-UTRA Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number) is a 3GPP-standardized channel number that uniquely identifies each carrier frequency in 4G LTE networks. For 5G NR, the equivalent is NR-ARFCN (New Radio ARFCN), which covers sub-6 GHz and millimeter-wave bands using a global frequency raster.

Enter an EARFCN (4G LTE) or NR-ARFCN (5G NR) to instantly get the frequency in MHz, associated band, DL/UL ranges, and bandwidth. All conversions follow 3GPP TS 36.101 and TS 38.101 specifications. 100% client-side, no data transmitted.

Understanding EARFCN and NR-ARFCN

Channel numbers (ARFCNs) are at the heart of frequency identification in mobile networks. Every 4G or 5G cell transmits on a specific channel identified by its EARFCN or NR-ARFCN, enabling terminals (UEs) to scan and connect to the correct frequencies during cell selection and handover.

LTE

4G LTE EARFCN Calculator

Defined in 3GPP TS 36.101, EARFCN uses a fixed 100 kHz step size. The downlink frequency is calculated as F_DL = F_DL_low + 0.1 x (EARFCN - N_Offs_DL). EARFCN ranges span from 0 to 65535, covering all FDD and TDD bands defined for LTE.

5G

Defined in 3GPP TS 38.101, NR-ARFCN ranges from 0 to 3,279,165 and uses a global frequency raster with three step sizes: 5 kHz (0 to 599,999, covering 0 to 3000 MHz), 15 kHz (600,000 to 2,016,666, covering 3000 to 24,250 MHz), and 60 kHz (2,016,667 to 3,279,165, covering 24,250.08 to 100,000 MHz).

FDD
FDD vs TDD

FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) bands use separate frequencies for downlink and uplink. TDD (Time Division Duplex) bands share the same frequency, alternating between DL and UL in time. The duplex mode directly impacts how EARFCNs and NR-ARFCNs are allocated.

Frequently Asked Questions about EARFCN and LTE/5G Frequencies

What is an EARFCN?
EARFCN (E-UTRA Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number) is a unique numeric identifier assigned to each frequency channel in 4G LTE, as specified in 3GPP TS 36.101. It allows you to determine the exact downlink and uplink frequency from a simple integer value, using standardized conversion formulas.
How do you convert an EARFCN to a frequency?
The 3GPP formula is: F_DL = F_DL_low + 0.1 x (EARFCN - N_Offs_DL), where F_DL_low is the lower frequency of the downlink band and N_Offs_DL is the EARFCN offset for that band. The same logic applies for uplink. Each LTE band has its own reference values defined in the 3GPP table.
What is the difference between EARFCN and NR-ARFCN?
EARFCN is used for 4G LTE bands (3GPP TS 36.101), while NR-ARFCN (New Radio ARFCN) is used for 5G NR bands (3GPP TS 38.101). NR-ARFCN uses a global frequency raster with variable step sizes (5 kHz, 15 kHz, or 60 kHz) depending on the frequency range, whereas EARFCN uses a fixed step of 100 kHz.
Which LTE bands are most commonly used in Europe?
In Europe, the most deployed LTE bands are B3 (1800 MHz) for urban coverage, B7 (2600 MHz) for capacity, B20 (800 MHz) for rural and indoor coverage, and B1 (2100 MHz). B28 (700 MHz) is increasingly used for extended coverage and 5G spectrum sharing.
How can I identify the band from an EARFCN?
Each LTE band corresponds to a specific EARFCN range. For example, EARFCNs 0 to 599 map to Band 1, 1200 to 1949 to Band 3, and 6150 to 6449 to Band 20. When you enter an EARFCN into the calculator, the band is automatically detected from the ranges defined by 3GPP.
What is NR-ARFCN for 5G?
NR-ARFCN (New Radio Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number) is the 5G NR equivalent of EARFCN, defined in 3GPP TS 38.101. It covers frequencies from 0 to 100 GHz, spread across three ranges: FR1 sub-3 GHz (5 kHz step), FR1 3 to 24.25 GHz (15 kHz step), and FR2 millimeter-wave (60 kHz step).
